4H Club takes up gardening
Passionate about greening the environment, 4H Club leader A. Linwood Seaver has mobilized the CNMI community to take part in the youth organization’s gardening project by utilizing recyclable and makeshift materials.
Speaking before members of the Saipan Rotary Club yesterday, Mr. Seaver, an instructor at the Northern Marianas College Agricultural Life Sciences Department, urged business leaders to set a good example by taking time to enrich the islands’ vegetation through tree planting.
4H Club, an environment conscious youth group comprised of individuals ranging from school students to young adults, has initiated the project in collaboration with Saipan Ice, NMC, the Public School System, and the Saipan Mayor’s Office.
“It may be small project. . .there’s not much involved. We have soil, plants, and the active participation of teachers and advisers working with students. We have the facilities and the knowledge to do this,” he said.
A group of 300 Tanapag Elementary School students have already expressed desire to join the gardening drive, as well as other students across all Saipan schools.
Despite the community’s strong interest, Mr. Seaver said 4H club is still soliciting for more volunteers and materials.
“We need students and our main goal is to educate. We must remember that everything we do today, somebody else will do tomorrow and the day after that,” said the NMC teacher. (Marian A. Maraya)
