Private schools end athletics meet
The Saipan Private School Athletic Association culminated its inter-school volleyball season Friday in an awarding ceremony that celebrated the value of collaboration among schools.
Calvary Christian Academy Principal Scott L. Norman underscored the importance of school-to-school interaction toward a well-rounded educational experience not only in academics but in recreational activities as well.
Now on its second year, private schools have ventured into friendly sports competitions in efforts to build better rapport between school students.
The program was started by John Belgard of Grace Christian Academy last year with the same sentiments in mind.
“We spent four to five weeks figuring out how we were going to accomplish this. And then finally we had the volleyball season off the ground last year and it went very well,” said Mr. Norman.
Seven Saipan private schools formed their respective teams to compete for Friday’s championship game finale.
In the Junior varsity category, third place went to the Seventh Day Adventist School, second place to Saipan Community School, and first place went to Mt. Carmel School.
Mt. Carmel School, Calvary Christian Academy, and Grace Christian Academy bagged the third, second, and first place titles in the Varsity category, respectively.
Grace Christian Academy varsitarian Will Hart was named the Most Valuable Player after the playoffs, while Jennifer Orpiano of Mt. Carmel School was also awarded the same title for the junior varsity category.
Other junior varsitarian MVPs included Jong Heun Yang of CCA, Moses Rangamar of Eucon International School, In Ah of SCS, Tito Paez of SDA, and Rey Crisostomo of Whispering Palms School.
Nathaniel Norman of CCA, Rey Kim of EIS, Phyllisina Leuta of MCS, Wen Taihe of Northern Marianas Academy, and Yvette Mafnas of SDA were also recipients to the MVP award in the varsity category. (Marian A. Maraya)
