The plea for character education in the schools
A recent Gallop Poll survey on education asked parents if they were in favor of the public schools teaching character development. An overwhelming 84% of the parents responded yes. In the same survey parents were asked what values should be taught to students: honesty received 97% of the votes; acceptance of different races-- 93%; patriotism-- 91%; caring-- 91%; moral courage-- 91%; the golden rule-- 90%; acceptance of different religious beliefs-- 87%.

From the conclusions of this survey, we can safely surmise that character development or ethics or moral education in the public schools seems to be on the minds of all parents.
