Fiji offers help, cooperation to Kiribati and Tuvalu

Suva (PINA Nius Online) – Fiji’s interim government is offering special help and cooperation to Kiribati and Tuvalu following the Pacific Islands Forum meeting in Tarawa.
A Fiji government statement said a Cabinet meeting has directed:
• the immigration department as a matter of urgency to facilitate the issuing of permits for students from Kiribati, Tuvalu and other neighboring countries;
• The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources to consider favorably and sympathetically Tuvalu’s quest to buy freehold land in Fiji, particularly land where the original indigenous Fijian landowners have indicated no interest in buying it back;
• The Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade to follow up a non-reciprocal trade agreement in favor of Kiribati and a possible direct shipping link between Rabi island in Fiji and Kiribati;
• The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade to follow up a possible joint request with Tuvalu and Kiribati for Japanese assistance to buy a ship to operate between the three countries and promote trade.
