Rota unveils GOP bets for 2001 election
The Republican Party has announced its slate for next year’s general election on Rota, naming three incumbents as their official candidates for mayor and the two Senate seats up for grabs.
Mayor Benjamin T. Manglona, and Senators Edward U. Maratita and Richardo S. Atalig will seek reelection in the November 2001 polls.
The party, however, has yet to designate its bet to run for the lone House seat, which is currently being occupied by Vice Speaker Alejo M. Mendiola who is a Republican.
It is not known whether he will run again next year. Mr. Mendiola could not be reached for comment.
Fidel M. Manglona, chair of the GOP on Rota, said the party has not received any application from aspirants to become its official candidate to the lower house.
“At this time we don’t have a response for the House of Representatives candidate,” he said in a statement. “When a candidate meeting the criteria comes forward, you can be sure we will certify that position as well.”
The three GOP candidates, all of them seasoned politicians in the island municipality, have been certified because they have passed the criteria set by the party leadership on Rota, said Mr. Manglona.
Democrats and Reform Party have not yet announced their candidates to face off the Republicans there.
