HOBART, Australia (AP) — A man who killed 35 people in a 1996 shooting rampage in one of the worst mass killings in Australia’s history has attempted suicide in his prison cell, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

Martin Bryant, 33, was found bleeding in his cell in Risdon Prison on the southern island state of Tasmania Monday night after slashing himself with a razor blade, the Hobart Mercury reported.

He had tried to cut an artery in the groin area and made several cuts to his inner arms, the report said. But he was not seriously injured.

Bryant is known to have made at least four suicide attempts, but the latest was the first in three years. He had earlier tried to strangle himself with bandages, choke himself by swallowing a rolled-up tube of toothpaste, and had beaten his head against a wall.

Bryant is in jail for life after being convicted of the murder of 35 people at the historic site of Port Arthur, Tasmania on April 28, 1996.

The Australian government pushed through tough new gun control laws following his killing spree.
