Tomokai donates books to Tinian

TINIAN – A Japanese organization based in Fujiyoshida, Japan has donated several hundred Japanese language children’s and young adult books to the municipality of Tinian and Aguiguan. Tomonokai presented the books to Mayor Francisco M. Borja as a token of their continuing support to the community.
“The Tomonokai Association has been instrumental in providing all expenses paid trips to Japan for our Tinian students in past years, and the exposure to the different culture and language has proven to be a very beneficial educational experience for our young students,” said Juanita M. Mendiola, chairperson of the Eighth Tinian Municipal Council. Ms. Mendiola had traveled to Fujiyoshida in October to meet with Mr. Koichiro Watari, president of Tomonokai.
“As mayor of Tinian, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tomonokai and Mr. Watari for their important contribution to our children of Tinian,” said Mr. Borja. In November, Mr. Watari was conferred as an honorary citizen of Tinian by Mayor Borja.
The books are adaptations of popular tales among children and young adults, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Lewis Carroll’s The Looking Glass, and other fiction titles.
Mayor Borja intends to present the books to the Tinian High School language department where the Japanese students will be able to use them as part of their course.
