Garment firms hold safety training
Saipan Garment Manufacturer’s Association (SGMA) continued its efforts to ensure safe workplaces by offering ongoing training for factory employees with 3-day courses in first aid and CPR.
The sessions, which are being held at SGMA’s offices on Middle Road, Saipan, began in mid-January and will continue through the first week of February.
Earlier this month, SGMA expanded and equipped its office to incorporate a new classroom-style training facility to handle numerous upcoming activities for the benefit of its members.
“As part of our Code of Conduct, a major goal of SGMA is to help make the workplaces of our member companies meet or exceed the highest labor standards in the world,” said SGMA Executive Director Richard A. Pierce.
“The type of training we’re conducting this week is required under OSHA for workplaces where emergency first aid must be available to workers, if needed, before real medical attention can be provided,” he added.
The Saipan Garment Manufacturer’s Association represents 31 of the islands’ 33 garment factories. Employing nearly 15,000 people, including 2,400 local residents, garment manufacturing is a driving economic force in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
