19th annual Tinian Cliff Fishing set

The Marianas Visitors Authority along with the Mayor’s Office of Tinian Will be staging the 19th annual Tinian Cliff Fishing derby from Feb. 9-11, 2001.

“We would like to inform all previous cliff fishermen and women as well as those who are interested in joining the event for the first time so that they may begin preparing themselves,” said MVA’s Martin Duenas.

Orientation for anglers will be held at 4:30pm on Feb. 9 at the MVA Tinian Office, located across from the gym. Registered participants must check in with derby official at the orientation and may begin fishing at designate fishing sites after.

Prizes will be given to the top three participants placing in the most variety, total weight and biggest fish categories.

The competition will continue all night on Friday, all day and night on Saturday and will end on Sunday at 10:00am. The awards banquet will follow at around 12:00noon.

The registration form, schedule of event and rules may be picked up at the MVA offices on Saipan, Rota and Tinian. Registration deadline is on Friday, Feb. 9 at 12:00 noon on Saipan. Last minute registration may only be accepted no later than 3:00pm in Tinian office. Fee is $25.00 per fisherman.

Cash prizes are: 1st places – $500; 2nd places – $300; and 3rd places – $200. Winners will also get a trophy each as well as in-kind prizes from members.
