Saipan Little League opens on Saturday
The Saipan Little League will kick off its 2001Baseball Season on Saturday with the confirmed participation of 12 Little League teams ages 9-12, six Junior League teams ages 13-14, four Senior League teams ages 14-16 and two Big League teams ages 16-18.
The league will open at 8:30am beginning with the team parade, followed by remarks from local dignitaries. The ceremony will take place at the Palacios field.
This year’s opening ceremony marked the return of centralizing all four divisions after 11 years. In 1991, the opening ceremony was centralized at the Palacios field with the Little League, Senior League and Big League Divisions.
This year also marks the first time for the Little League games to be played at the softball field at the Susupe Sports Complex. The last time the Little League games were played at the softball field was back in 1993 during the Far-East Regional Baseball Tournament in which the CNMI earned the right to represent the Far-East Region at the 1993 Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Immediately after the ceremony, the Little League Division will open the 2001 season at the softball field as the defending champion Dandan Blue Jays takes on the mighty Little Sluggers.
Little League games will follow at 11:00am and at 1:00pm, according to Asia Pacific Region Deputy Director and Acting League President James A. Ada.
Other events scheduled on the opening day will feature the Junior League Division at the Palacios field as defending champions Ol’Aces takes on the much improved Comets at 12:30pm and will be followed by the Senior League Division game at 3:30pm as the San Vicente Starz battles the San Roque Tanapag Expos.
This will also mark the first time all 4 Division games will be played on the same day, said Mr. Ada.
