The US Equal Opportunity Commission will offer a two-day technical assistance seminar that will teach employers the rudiments in handling discrimination, harassment and other related problems common in the workplace.
Dubbed “Basic & Advanced EEO Topics,” the seminar answers the call for a more in-depth discussion and substantive subject matter on workplace issues. It also offers an expanded and flexible format that is complemented by workshop choices ranging from beginner to advanced levels.

Honolulu Local Director Timothy A. Riera noted that the seminar’s new, two-day format would permit more time, more topics and more in-depth discussion. “We’ve added workshops so individuals can make choices to fit their specific needs. More importantly the smaller groups can enjoy more interaction between participants and the EEOC trainers,” he explained.

The first day of the seminar, for instance, “Responding to EEOC” will prepare employers on how to deal with an EEOC complaint. The topic is truly a must for any company unfamiliar with the agency.

Both seminar days will also cover a topic which is as critical as it is controversial today. “Investigating Harassment” is an advanced training program that will instruct employers on the proper procedures in dealing with employee complaints about harassment.

The topic will give companies a run down on how to conduct a timely and thorough investigation as well as examining the role and conduct of the investigator, interviewing witness, preparing investigative reports and other factors.

Another noteworthy topic in the two-day seminar will be the plenary session and workshop on EEOC’s “Alternative Dispute Resolution” program. “We are thrilled to announce that we have scheduled the EEOC’s first mediation program ever to be offered in the CNMI and Guam,” stated ADR Coordinator Denise Barnard.

Ms. Barnard’s alternative to litigation program has met outstanding success in Central and Northern California as well as Hawaii.

In addition, seminar coordinator Linda Li observed that the EEOC’s seven Technical Assistance manuals have been updated for 2001 and include policy updates through early December.

“We designed the seminar to provide a great educational experience for both previous attendees and newcomers. And, while people who attend both days will get the maximum benefit, participants who can only attend one day will certainly receive a standout, stand-alone training,” she said.

The “Basic & Advanced EEO Topics” seminar, conducted in partnership with the CNMI Chapter of the Society for Human Resources Management, will be held on March 15 and 16 at the Hyatt Regency Saipan.

Seminars will be from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. The price of $189 per day or $189 for both days includes breakfast, lunch and seminar materials including the 2001 EEOC Technical Assistance manuals.
