Volunteer lawyers to be recognized

The CNMI Bar Association and the Marianas Legal Services Corporation are planning to commend lawyers who provided free legal services to low-income residents in the Commonwealth.
CNMI Bar representative to the MLSC Board, Lucia L. Blanco-Maratita said the volunteer lawyers would be honored at the monthly Bar Association meeting which will be held on April 19 at the Hyatt Regency-Saipan.
Ms. Blanco-Maratita said the purpose of the luncheon is to recognize who participated in the “Gimme Five” program, a special project jointly sponsored by the CNMI Bar Association and MLSC.
Participating lawyers in the special project donate their legal expertise to low income persons who applied for help at MLSC, but may have been turned away due to limited resources, a conflict of interest or other reasons.
“The “Gimme Five” name refers to the goal of having attorneys donate five hours of services per quarter to help indigent residents have equal access to justice,” Ms. Blanco-Maratita explained.
Approximately ten attorneys are slated for honors at this year’s presentation.
In past years, the special awards have been given to attorneys Jay Sorensen and Pamela Brown.
