Saipan Recreational Center this weekend will be the site of exciting and bruising halfcourt basketball action as the Northern Marianas College will be sponsoring a three on three men’s basketball tournament.

NMC Health and Physical Education Program in cooperation with Powerade is organizing the cage event in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the tertiary institution.

The basketball tournament is also in conjunction with the college’s Charter Day activities, which would be held during the weekend.

“By holding the basketball tournament, the NMC hopes to promote sports as well as commemorate the 25th anniversary of the college,” physical education and health instructor and activity coordinator Jerome Ierome said.

For his part, Mr. Ierome’s colleague and fellow coordinator Rufino Aguon enjoined basketball fanatics to sign up for the tournament. He said players could form a team made of five players, wherein the two other players will be used as substitutes during the match.

“If they have what it takes to win, then they should sign up immediately and get ready to play serious basketball come weekend,” Mr. Aguon said.

The three on three tournament will not use the “make it, take it” possession rule. The team which first scores 16 points, provided they are ahead by two points, or the team leading after 22 minutes wins the game.

The three on three tournament will have three categories — 19 and under, open and 40 and over. Participating teams must pay a $50 entry fee which would cover the cash prizes of the winning teams.

Teams would also be given free Powerade drinks and a chance to become the best three on three basketball team in the island.

Deadline for submission of entries is April 26 and the tournament will commence the next day, April 27 from 6 pm to 9 pm. The second and final day of hoop action will be on April 28 and will be from 7 am to 3 pm.
