The Parents Association for Children with Autism yesterday disclosed that a comprehensive plan proposing the establishment of an Autism Research Center is now underway.

PACA chair Jaime Vergara said the plan came up during the continuous meeting held by the association members.

PACA noted that there seems to be a high percentage of occurrence of autism in Tinian and tie-up possible radiation experiments in the 50’s as the source of the high number of autism-related problems.

He said Dr. Adrian Bren reaffirmed in his presentation that there are various theories on the genetic and environmental type of clarity and the state of knowledge on the nature of autism syndrome.

According to Mark Staal of the Early Childhood and PACA president Frank D. Cabrera, radiation experiments in the Pacific since the 50s might have effects in influencing the neuro-biological disorders in children.

“The need to access the state-of-the-art knowledge on autism, and contributing to that with a research center was obviously a consensus among the group when the Research Center proposal was made,” said Mr. Vergara.

As part of the collaborative effort of the community to educate the public on autism, Northern Marianas College Nursing educator Cyndy Tice disclosed that a nursing program will include autism as a subject matter in its curriculum.

“Other parents are already expressing interest in following your example to organize themselves and take an active role in addressing the special needs of their children, both in health and in education,” said the educator.

While the workshop revealed the incredible tasks that need to be done to set in place systems and structures that would care for those afflicted with autism, the participants, parents and care providers, underscored need for a cooperative, consultative and coordinate efforts to effectively work on the proposal to attain the completion of the said project.
