Lucido wins pool championship
At long last.
After emerging runner-up in numerous weekly events, Joey Lucido finally notched his first championship in the regular pool tournaments at the Corner Pocket in Garapan.
Lucido, long dubbed as one of the most improved players in the league, beat previous champion Rolly Villanueva in the finals of the Tuesday Night Budweiser-Marpac 8-Ball Pool Challenge last week.
He won the first place cash prize while Villanueva, and Jojo Talibong settled for second and third, respectively.
A total of 12 billiards enthusiasts showed up to play the Tuesday night regular event, which is played on a double-elimination format where the champion comes home with 50 percent of all the entry fees collected.
The second and third place finishers collect 30 and 20 percent of the fees, respectively. The top finishers also get a package of Budweiser giveaways.
Meanwhile, Zheng Cheng beat Raffy Arroyo in a down-the-wire finals match, 4-3, to rule the Budweiser-Marpac 9-Ball Pool Challenge Monday last week.
The match saw the lead change several times, but a key scratch from Arroyo with the game and the championship on the line did it for Zheng.
Zheng won $70 for his win while Arroyo received $50 for placing second.
The nine-ball event is played on single round format where the top two winners share the prize pot.
Entry fee is $10 per player for each tournament. A handicapping system is in place to give less skilled players a better chance against the veterans.
