Most of the business establishments on Saipan, including restaurants and bars that were inspected by the Bureau of Environmental Health on the first week of April, maintain good sanitation.

This was disclosed by Public Health Secretary Dr. James U. Hofschneider in a media statement issued yesterday.

Only one restaurant – the Sammy’s Place in San Jose – was ordered closed due to serious violations of health and sanitation standards, according to the DPH-BEH statement.

But an employee of the restaurant, Tess Sami, said in a telephone interview that the establishment already re-opened last Friday, April 12, after environmental health representatives conducted another inspection.

“Everything is now okay,” according to Sami, who said insecticide was sprayed in some portions of the establishment. The restaurant’s owner, Samuel Enriquez, was not available for further comment yesterday afternoon.

Among the establishments that were given a “Grade A”, which means that they comply with all the sanitation requirements of the bureau, are: Lucky Snack Bar, Lucky night Club, Jazz Bar & Entertainment, GIG Discotheque, White Horse Karaoke Bar and ABC Store in Garapan; Benny’s Place Restaurant in Tanapag; Isabella Gift Shop in San Jose; Red Tag Convenient Store in Chalan Piao; SMC Retail in Chalan Kiya; Cepeda’s 3-in-One Store in Kagman; XO Market in Chalan Laulau; and Gimbab Express Catering Services in Koblerville.

Three establishments were given a “Grade B”, meaning that, these only have minor deficiencies in their sanitation. These are the Xin Hua Mart and the Baik Song Market in San Antonio, and the Siloam Restaurant in Tanapag.

None were given a “Grade C”, which is close to a closure order.

Sanitary inspection of business establishments is mandated by Public Law 12-48.
