Scuba dive cleanup tomorrow
As part of activities lined up in celebration of the Environmental Awareness Month, the scuba dive cleanup, aimed at mitigating the pollution at the Saipan Lagoon, will be held tomorrow, Saturday.
Division of Environmental Quality public information officer Rebecca Snider urged volunteers who would like to participate in the activity to go to the Sugar Dock at 7:30am tomorrow.
“Volunteers should be ‘Open-Water Certified’ and are asked to provide their own snorkeling and SCUBA gear,” she said. “The DEQ will provide the filled tanks, mesh bags and trash bags.”
“The Mayor’s Office has donated the use of a boom truck to lift the heavier items onto shore,” she added.
Besides divers, Snider also urged other volunteers to support the activity by joining DEQ’s land-based crews at the beach.
Volunteer divers would pick up trash from the Saipan Lagoon, to support cleanup efforts.
The scuba dive cleanup is just one of the major activities slated this month.
Last Monday and Tuesday, representatives from different local and federal agencies trooped to the Saipan Diamond Hotel to attend the CNMI’s 1st Environmental Symposium.
Some students from Guam who shared their experiences with regards to environmental concerns also participated in the symposium.
Representatives from the DEQ, the Coastal Resources Management Office, the Northern Marianas College, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation, among others, spoke on their respective programs that generally deal with mitigating the impact of development on the environment.
The DEQ encouraged those interested to join the scuba dive cleanup to call Joe Kaipat or Peter Houk at 664-8500 to 01.
