The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs will begin defense of its title in the opening game of the Inter-Government Basketball League tonight at the Garapan Basketball Court.

In a rematch of last year’s playoffs, DCCA will face a tough Public School System that is hungry for revenge at 7pm.

DCCA will once again rely on their veteran cagers in attempting a repeat of last year’s playoff win.

Playmaker Elias Rangamar and all-time great Tony Rogolifoi will once again suit up for DCCA. The two veterans will be joined in the team by acrobatic swingman Wayne Pua and bull-strong Romeo Iginoef.

Pua and Iginoef both played under Rangamar in the recent 25-and-under Basketball League.

This time around though, PSS player-coach Paul Joyce won’t have to worry about the 6’5″ Marvin Williams and Ed Diaz, who are no longer in the DCCA roster.

Although this year is expected to be tough for DCCA, Rangamar and Rogolifoi still showed their humorous side.

“Tony and I have already glued the championship trophy, so I don’t know how the others teams will take it if they beat us,” said Rangamar. “They’ll need a crowbar.”

Rogolifoi, for his part, added a caveat for the opposing teams. “Be ready, the champs are coming.”

The second game of the double-header will feature last year’s runner up team, Department of Public Safety going up against the Commonwealth Ports Authority at 8:30pm.

DPS will once again field a solid lineup that includes veteran forward Peter Camacho and sharp shooting Elias Saralu.

Forward Jerry Ayuyu, Jay Olopai and Tars Olopai will also provide the public protectors presence inside the paint and perimeter shooting.

For their part, CPA is expected to get solid performances from shooting guard Carlos Salas and forward Reno Celis. CPA will attempt to put in a better performance this year and try to make the playoffs.
