May declared NMI Tourism Month
Gov. Juan N. Babauta yesterday signed a proclamation endorsing May as Tourism Month, as he noted the many contributions of the travel sector in nourishing the Commonwealth’s economy.
Babauta said the local tourism industry has played a major role in building the Commonwealth’s economic infrastructure and has continued to be an important contributor to the CNMI’s growth by providing employment and livelihood opportunities for local residents.
“This year, the Northern Marianas aims to attract one million visitors. Tourism benefits and substantially enhances the quality of life of residents,” the Governor said.
The proclamation signing ceremony, which was attended by Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente, Rep. Frank Aldan, and key Marianas Visitors Authority officials led by Board Chair Dave M. Sablan and acting managing director Vicky Benavente, signaled the month-long activities for the Tourism Month.
The 2002 Tourism Month recognizes the importance of tourism in the CNMI, with the MVA lining up a series of activities that are aimed at luring more tourists to the islands.
On May 3, 4, and 5, the MVA invited the public to join in the celebration of Tinian’s San Jose Fiesta, which is expected to be filled with foods, rides, fun and entertainment. The celebration will be highlighted by the coronation of the San Jose Fiesta Queen.
Also on May 4, the MVA will hold the 16th annual Tourism Month Ayuda Fun Run along the southern edge of the Beach Road Pathway.
Also included in the month-long celebration is the holding of the annual Saipan Flower/Ornamental Plans Festival, which will be held at the Multi-Purpose Hall on May 11; the Tagaman Triathlon on May 18; the Tagakids Triathlon on May 19; the third annual SOPHIA Walk on May 19; and the weekend food extravaganza, the Taste of the Marianas International Food and Beer Festival on May 4, 11, 18, and 25 at the American Memorial Park.
“Tourism promotes inter-cultural understanding and appreciation of the people, geography, and history of the CNMI. It also balances the need to preserve a healthy environment with the need for economic development,” said Babauta.
