Rota’s own history book, which details the island’s rich history and culture, is finally out in the market.

Sen. Paul Manglona was overjoyed with the release of Rota, a history book written by Don Farrell with the assistance of the Kolehio Foundation, a non-profit organization.

“I want to thank Don Farrel for helping the people of Rota, the mayor’s office and other people who helped to make this book possible. It is only the beginning,” said the senator.

He urged people to write in their comments and other recommendations to make the Rota history book more comprehensive and better in the next edition. Manglona said the book is an ongoing project.

“People should come to Rota and know more about our island. Tinian and Saipan have their own history books, we tried to come out with our history book in the last three years and now we have it,” he said.

Manglona said there are 3,000 copies of the book, which hopefully would go to schools and other agencies related to tourism and cultural development. However, the senator pointed out that he hopes to recover some of the cost and the decision has been made to make the Rota history book part of the CNMI’s souvenir items, to be sold at $11.

The project was spearheaded by the Kolehio Foundation, the primary goal of which is to instill education in the youth. The group said in a statement that it sees the release of the book as just one of the many ways to educate the Rota people.

Aside from Rota’s history during the Spanish, German, and Japanese regimes, the book takes the reader through a journey of evolution and adaptation, starting with the creation of the Marianas Island chain.

“The people of Rota are unique and our island is unique in its own right. Having a history book solely devoted to the island of Rota will ensure that our heritage maintains its integrity and dignity,” said Manglona.
