Barbeque showdown tonight at Taste
The 2004 Taste of the Marianas continues to take the American Memorial Park by storm as it highlights its fourth week celebration with a barbeque showdown tonight at the park’s Bell Tower Field.
Dubbed the Island Barbeque Cook Off, the event will be held from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, and is limited to the first 20 entries.
According to a statement by the Marianas Visitors Authority, all participants will be given five pounds of defrosted ribs and will be permitted an hour to marinate and soak. Participants also have the option to broil their meat.
All participants are required to provide ingredients, mixing bowls, cutting boards, and other necessary utensils for cooking and presentation.
Officials will then allot another 30 minutes for the cooking of the ribs. Upon the event official’s signal to stop, all participants must remove the ribs from the grill and begin with their presentation set-up, which time limit is set for 20 minutes.
Participants will then place cooked ribs at a designated table, where judging will take place. All participants must leave the area of the table until the judging process is completed.
Judging will be based on taste (1-10 points), originality and uniqueness (1-10 points), presentation with the serving plate (1-10 points), and cooking time, which will be determined based on the amount of blood remaining in the meat—minus one point for meat with little blood and minus two for meat with excess blood. Also, a point will be awarded to each presentation with no blood.
All participants must also be present during the announcement of winners to win. All complaints and concerns must be brought up to officials during the event
At the end of the event, each participant is required to clean up the area used.
Up for grabs is a total pot of $225, with $100 going to the first place winner, while second and third place winners earn $75 and $50.
The 2004 Taste of the Marianas kicked off on May 15 and is set to conclude on June 12 with an eating contest. The event also features various vendors, and live entertainment—music and dancing.
