MVA’s Ogren bids Saipan goodbye
On his last day as top executive of the CNMI premier tourism marketing arm, Marianas Visitors Authority managing director Jonas Ogren joined the industry’s Micronesian leaders during a general assembly of the Pacific Asia Travel Association’s Micronesia Chapter at the Saipan World Resort.
Ogren is headed back to his native homeland Sweden, after his two-year stint as MVA managing director and spending a career of over eight years in the CNMI’s tourism industry.
“I’ve really had a great time working for the MVA,” Ogren said. “I have enjoyed being a part of an organization consisting of dynamic individuals that hold a common goal.”
Dr. John Salas, PATA Micronesia’s chair, handed out a certificate of appreciation for Ogren’s contributions to the region’s tourism.
“In that we know you will return to Micronesia at one point, we thank you and we will miss you,” said Salas.
Ogren considers the improvement of the MVA’s relationships with travel industry players connecting the CNMI to Japan, Korea and China as a major accomplishment that has contributed to the agency’s goals during his tenure.
He became the MVA’s top executive in June 2002. The MVA rehired Ogren in 2003 for another one-year term.
Before becoming MVA managing director, the Cornell University alumnus had a six-year stint with the Rota Resort and three years of membership with the MVA’s Public Relations and Ad Committee.
MVA chairman David Sablan described Ogren’s leadership as one that “tremendously contributed to the success of the MVA.”
The MVA chairman credited Ogren’s efforts in promoting the CNMI as a tourist destination to Japan, Korea and China. As MVA managing director, Ogren ensured that the three major islands—Saipan, Tinian and Rota—received proper promotional recognition, according to Sablan.
