Rotary basketball coaches to meet tomorrow
With the less than friendly visit that Saipan received from Typhoon Tingting, parts of the island still remain without power and water. The Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium in Oleai is no exception, so the Rotary Club of Saipan Summer Youth Basketball League is going to push back the opening slate of games that were set to begin this past Monday.
Just how far back will be decided tomorrow, as there will be a mandatory coaches meeting to reschedule opening day for the cagers at the Ada Gym conference room at noon.
“It’s pretty dark down here. We have no power and no running water. I’ve heard that it might not be fixed until Saturday,” said league coordinator Elias Rangamar.
As a reminder to all of the aspiring coaches, Rangamar explained that all coaches that didn’t complete the certification course are in “limbo” and must reschedule with his office as soon as possible. He continued that if the coach does not complete the clinic then his team would not be permitted to play in the league.
“There are a lot of talented individuals out there, but they need to understand the game. The coaches need to improve themselves or the kids will never improve,” he said.
The Rotary league is some of the finest basketball on island, and the players are playing for more than just a trophy or a title.
“The team that wins gets a lot of bragging rights, and the winners usually represent Saipan in the Marianas Invitational Basketball Tournament,” said Rangamar.
