Sixers I, Ol’Aces win in Rotary
Sixers I and opening day victim, Ol’Aces, posted easy victories last Thursday in the continuation of the 14th Annual Saipan Rotary Club Summer Youth Basketball League at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Defending champion Ol’Aces kissed Monday’s setback to the Sixers I goodbye when they ran over the CNMI Women National Team 64-43 in the first game.
There was not much the 2004 Micronesian Basketball Tournament bronze medalists could do in the first half as they got buried under an avalanche of points.
MBT All-Tourney Team member Beverly Igitol tried to jumpstart her squad in the second half, scoring 17 of her total 19 points, but Ol’Aces were just faster and bigger and cruised to the 21-point win.
Steven Kim and Kovin Ogumoro led a balanced attack by Ol’Aces with 11 and 10 points. Chariss Ruluked, meanwhile, helped Igitol by finishing with 10 markers.
In the second game, Julian Ranas and Kevin Cequena took turns running circles against around their defenders as Sixers I routed the Sparks 97-68.
Ranas took care of business in the first 20 minutes of the ballgame, shooting the lights out at a rate of a point a minute, as Sixers I grabbed an insurmountable 55-20 advantage at the break.
Cequena then picked up where his fellow UFO standout left off in the second quarter, as the former IVYBL MVP ignited Sixers I’s second half blitzkrieg by unloading 12 of his 17 total points after the break.
Ranas led six teammates in double figures with 24 points, while Sparks main man Mike Cruz equaled Ranas’ output in the loss.
