SGMA continues with environmental initiatives
Representatives from member companies of the Saipan Garment Manufacturers Association met Tuesday with David Hodges of the CNMI Division of Environmental Quality, and Don Smith and Patrick Guerrero of the CNMI Water Task Force to discuss environmental initiatives and ongoing projects.
Smith and Guerrero presented their projects and how factories within SGMA will be affected by work to be performed on metering, billing, hook-up monitoring and eventual improved water supply and quality.
Hodges made a PowerPoint presentation on the recently announced partnership between DEQ and SGMA, “Green Garments”, which will be funded by a federal grant awarded through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
“Green Garments” will facilitate environmental audits at Saipan garment factories to promote pollution prevention, recycling, source reduction, and energy conservation, and develop a “Garment Manufacturers Source Reduction/Prevention Handbook,” which will be incorporated into the SGMA Code of Conduct’s compliance efforts.
SGMA committed to its Environmental Initiatives early this year. SGMA is comprised of 23 of Saipan’s 25 apparel-manufacturing companies.
