APPA confab to take on domestic violence
The American Probation and Parole Association Pacific Training will begin its series of conferences for the public on Aug. 22 with particular focus on domestic violence.
The Sunday training will be held at 3pm-6pm at the Hotel Nikko Saipan.
Sponsoring the conference are the CNMI and Guam’s judiciary branches and the Office of the Governor.
“This is the first time the APPA conference ever stepped outside the continent of the United States,” said probation officer Juan Aguon.
The conference will accommodate a maximum of 250 participants. On site registration will be provided for interested individuals who have not registered.
Sunday training will introduce Public Law 14-9, the Rosalia’s Law, which tackles domestic violence. Two victims of domestic violence will be on hand to share their perspective on the matter.
The public is also invited to attend the last training on Aug. 27, which would focus on domestic violence in-service training and safety simulation.
This session is a dynamic approach to enhance officer or service provider safety. It will take the officer safety training from the classroom theory to a real-world setting.
“Just to let [people] out there know, there is hope with this training. We have trained people in this island that can help out. There is hope. They don’t need to hide; they don’t need to be silent,” said Aguon.
Sessions from Aug. 23-26 will especially be for law enforcement officials and service providers. This training will give an understanding of the dynamics and complex task of managing sex offenders and the registration requirement in the community.
Participants in this session will also be informed on safety training for professionals handling face-to-face contact with the criminal.
The Domestic Violence Task Force will appear on the John Gonzales live talk show on Aug. 18 to answer questions regarding the training.
