MVA’s Benavente, NMC’s Guerrero to join MY WAVE beach cleanup
Marianas Visitors Authority managing director Vicky Benavente, Northern Marianas College president Tony V. DeLeon Guerrero, and NMC tourism instructor Larry Lee will be participating in this Saturday’s MY WAVE Club beach cleanup, according to the Marianas Tourism Education Council.
Also, MTEC said several members of the Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands have promised to help provide meals and drinks to the estimated 60 students and MY WAVE Club advisers who would join the event. They are Dai-Ichi Hotel, World Resort-Saipan and Saipan Grand Hotel.
Benavente, Guerrero and Lee are members of the MTEC board. Other members expected to be at the event are Public School System Associate Commissioner Rita Sablan; Ernst & Young partner James Whitt; Yoichi Matsumura, general manager of Pacific Development Inc., a travel and tour agency; and Pacific Islands Club’s director for sports and entertainment activities Jon Cramer.
“Beach cleanups help maintain the island’s beauty and promote tourism. This activity is also an opportunity for everyone, including our young students, to get better insights on the importance of tourism to the CNMI through the exposure it provides them,” said Benavente.
Besides cleaning the beach, MY WAVE Club members would also be greeting tourists at hotels along their way. Cleanup area is from Sugar Dock to World Resort Saipan. Assembly time is 7:30am.
The activity, the first to be held by the tourism clubs for this school year, was spearheaded by the Marianas High School MY WAVE Club through its adviser, Tim Faska. Other MY WAVE Clubs that will join the event are those from Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School in Tanapag, William S. Reyes Elementary School in Chalan Kanoa, Oleai Elementary School in Oleai, and Hopwood Junior High School in San Antonio.
MY WAVE Clubs were formed by MTEC in coordination with PSS to help promote tourism from the grassroots. Supporters include HANMI and other members of the private sector, among them DFS-Saipan, Tan Holdings Corp. and Ernst & Young.
“Everyone is invited to join the event and support the MY WAVE Clubs,” an MTEC statement said. (PR)
