Sharer, Kindel top SIS fun run
The 4th Annual Saipan International School 5K Fun Run hit just in time to avoid the wrath of Supertyphoon Chaba, with over 150 early birds taking Marpi roads by storm Saturday morning.
Emerging with the fastest time was long-time distance runner Dirk Sharer, who clocked in at 19:24 to add another first place finish to his many achievements.
Russ Quinn and event record holder Ketson “Jack” Kabiriel placed second and third overall with times of 20:05 and 20:15. Kabiriel set the event record in 2001 with a time of 18:59.
Topping the women’s category was Suzanne Kindel, who crossed the finish line in 24:57. She was followed by Teanna Stevensen (25:05) and Vicki Taitano (25:23). Kindel was only female competitor in the masters division, while Stevensen and Taitano’s performances also earned them first place in their respective age groups, with Stevenson in the 20-29 category and Taitano in the 40-49.
Other Top 10 overall finishers were Tom Austin (20:20), John Douglas (21:11), Rob Carruth (22:09), Fred Camacho (23:17), Mike Johnson (24:04), Marshal Manzano (24:22), and Robin Sapong (24:42).
Quinn, Sapong, and Nate Hawley (25:16) topped the men’s 30-39 category; Sharer, Austin, and Douglas bested the 30-39 category; and Camacho, Florian Braig (26:04), and Stan Good (27:24) won the masters category.
Notable female age group finishers include Shane Boerboon (27:30) and Tessa Pebbles (35:58) in the 20-29 category; Laura Hohman (28:49), Yoriko Sugie (31:13), and Gene Chagaris (32:13) in the 30-39 category; and Kathy Yuknavage (28:49) and Gayle Berger (31:57) in the 40-49 category.
The race kicked off at Banzai Cliff area, which also served as the finish point. Runners worked their way towards 2.5K-mark near the Marpi landfill before back tracking to Banzai.
