Typhoons can be good

Proof #1: Has anyone noticed? Traffic on the island flows quicker, more smoothly and without the usual frustrations when the power is off? Yes, it’s true. The intrusive, irrational and inconsistently timed traffic lights cause most of the delays, accidents and snarls associated with day-to-day driving on Saipan.

We need less—not more—signals, blinkers and traffic signs. Maybe none at all would be best. Each person then notices how traffic is flowing and shares the road with his/her fellow travelers. Contrary to popular belief, less governing and more personal freedom and thus more personal responsibility always result in a more productive and happier society.

Some will claim this increased flow of traffic is due only to a lesser volume of cars after the storm but this is not the reason. The real reason is because each individual driver looks out for and respects the other drivers and their right to a ‘fair share’ of the road in a way not seen when “the law” is in charge of their driving. Cars merge seamlessly to and from feeder roads and main roads without the usual frustration, honking and impatience. What makes it work? Mutual respect for our fellow citizens.

Proof #2: While traveling up the Marpi road to Suicide Cliff the morning after Chaba I saw three men clearing the many trees that blocked the road. Armed only with machetes and a big dose of goodwill, these gentlemen worked tirelessly and without pay or other inducement for hours to help their fellow citizens gain access to this little traveled back road.

We should all thank Henry, Max and Joe (I hope I got their names right) and the spirit of helping that prompted them to pitch in and lend a helping hand when one was needed. I have attached a picture of these “Robin Hoods of the Road” which I hope you find room to print along with this letter.

In short, after a typhoon, we take more time to care about each other.
