Donations have begun to flow in for the American Red Cross-CNMI chapter in its campaign to raise funds to support relief operations for supertyphoon Chaba victims.

John Hirsh, the Red Cross local chapter’s executive director, disclosed this yesterday, adding that the group expects hefty donations from private companies on Saipan and Guam this week. He said a Rota firm also donated some $5,000 over the weekend.

“The donations are increasing,” Hirsh said, adding that there were some individuals who donated “a couple hundred” to a thousand dollars.

The Red Cross initiated the call for community donations, as relief efforts were projected to cost over a million dollars. The Red Cross has set a goal to raise some $1.5 million for its relief operations.

Last Friday, the Bank of Hawaii and Tan Holdings Corp. donated $25,000 each to the Red Cross. Aqua Resort Club also pitched in $3,000, plus blankets that could be used by evacuees.
