EOC says Chaba evacuees down to 697
The number of Supertyphoon Chaba victims staying in government shelters has gone down to 697, the CNMI Emergency Operations Center said.
EOC public information officer Jenn Castro said evacuees at Saipan’s shelters totaled 612 yesterday, including 275 at the Marianas High School.
Castro said Tinian gym had 71 evacuees, while the Rota Aging Center had 14.
Right after the onslaught of Supertyphoon Chaba, the number of evacuees reached about a thousand. The daily total hovered at that number last week. By Tuesday, the total went down to 746.
Meanwhile, Castro said the Saipan Typhoon Relief Center opened up yesterday at the Joeten Kiyu Public Library. The center accepts applications for relief items such as tents, tarps, cots, and blankets for those affected by Chaba. Castro said the STRC would be open Mondays through Saturdays, from 8am to 8pm.
The EOC said applicants staying at government shelters and with destroyed homes would be prioritized to receive relief goods.
In other post-typhoon recovery update, Castro said the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has already fully restored power supply on all three airports on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
She said the Rota Health Center received supplies of oxygen tanks yesterday, while the island would receive fuel supply from Mobil today.
