The U.S. Navy yesterday detonated live vintage ordnance that was discovered on the waters of the Rota West Harbor after the onslaught of Supertyphoon Chaba.

The Emergency Management Office issued an emergency public advisory yesterday morning that the detonation would take place at the As Matmos cliff from 1pm to 2pm on the same day.

The EMO advised commercial pilots, tour operators, residents and fishermen to stay at least one mile away from the detonation site.

Emergency Operations Center public information officer Jenn Castro said the detonation was conducted safely by the Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Detachment team from Guam.

Detonated was an MK4 vintage ordnance, Castro said. “The Navy pulled it out from the waters and detonated it.”

Castro added that the Rota West Harbor remained closed as of yesterday, since the facility has yet to be cleared of debris.

The last time emergency responders extracted vintage ordnance from Rota’s waters was in Nov. 2002. They extracted from Sasanhaya Bay depth charges, which threatened not only public safety but also the marine ecosystem.
