Shelters close down tomorrow
All government shelters that were opened in the run up to Supertyphoon Chaba will be closed down tomorrow, with scores of evacuees having gone back to their homes after nearly two weeks in evacuation.
The number of evacuees staying at government shelters went down to 442 yesterday.
Emergency Operations Center public information officer Jenn Castro said some of the evacuees at the Marianas High School were relocated to the Ada gymnasium, while the rest of them went back to their homes. Evacuees at the Tanapag Social Hall also moved to the Ada gym, bringing the total number of evacuees at the gym to 210.
Some 143 residents remained sheltered at the Kagman Community Center. The Tinian gym had 75 evacuees, while the Rota Aging Center housed 14 residents.
Castro said many evacuees went home after receiving relief supplies such as tents, tarps, cots, and blankets. She said those with destroyed homes would be given the necessary assistance, including rental of temporary houses to live in.
With the scheduled closure of the shelters, Castro said the MHS—as well as the Oleai Elementary School—would resume classes on Sept. 7.
Chaba displaced over a thousand residents, who fled their homes and took refuge at government shelters for several days.
