A tourist was rescued from drowning in Managaha waters Thursday afternoon, police said.

Initial reports from the Department of Public Safety-Boating Safety Division showed that the victim, Noda Hiroyuko, was motionless but still breathing when found.

Hiroyuko was immediately brought to the Smiling Cove Marina where medics had been waiting.

Based on the victim’s wife’s account, she and Hiroyuko went to Managaha at about 10:40am that day and proceeded to swim up to 11:30am. They took a break for lunch. Afterwards, they went back to the water to snorkel.

“They said they were snorkeling [in waters] about neck high when a large wave struck her husband and the snorkel came out from his mouth and he began taking in water,” police said.

BBS said Hiroyuki was admitted to the Commonwealth Health Center for treatment after fluid was reportedly found in his lungs.

BBS said the victim never lost consciousness or vomited prior to the rescue.

The tourist was rescued by other swimmers and was successfully taken off the water by lifeguard Antonio Ichiruo. (Liberty Dones)
