With the 20th Annual Saipan Fishing Tournament kicking off next weekend, the Department of Public Safety’s Boating Safety Section will be available to conduct courtesy inspections for all boaters participating in the event, as they have for the past 20 years.

Traditionally, the week prior to the tournament is “Boating Safety Week,” but this year the Boating Safety Section was hampered from performing the courtesy safety inspections two weeks prior to the tournament by all of the foul weather that the NMI has experienced.

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 7, and continuing through to the tournament dates, officers will check your boat from bow to stern free of charge. The Boating Safety Officers will feature three displays in addition to the inspections. On Wednesday, Sept. 8, the officers will be at Sugar Dock. On Thursday, Sept. 9 they will move to Fishing Base, while on Friday, Sept. 10, the display will be at Smiling Cove.

“There’s no need for the owners to bring their boats to us. If they call us we will go to their homes or wherever they have their boat to make sure that they have the proper safety equipment prior to the tournament,” said Officer Juan Diaz.

To schedule a safety inspection, contact the DPS Boating Safety Section by calling 664-9180/1/2/3/4. Those boaters who have completed a courtesy inspection prior to the original scheduled tournament will be honored.

The Department of Public Safety and the Boating Safety Officers especially, would like to wish all of the participants good luck on the upcoming tournament.
