Tourist fights with flight attendants, ends up in prison
A tourist found himself in police custody upon arriving on Saipan Friday and is now charged with a criminal offense for fighting with two flight attendants while in the aircraft.
Complaint data showed that Liu Shijun, who is charged with interference with flight crew members at the U.S. District Court, assaulted two flight attendants while aboard China Southern Airlines en route from Shanghai to Saipan on Sept. 11.
Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent James T. Barry reported that Liu, who was seated at 18H, got up and walked towards the front of the aircraft.
When the two attendants asked him where he was going, Liu allegedly said that he needed to use the restroom.
When the attendants directed him to use the lavatories in the rear portion of the aircraft, he allegedly refused and became combative.
The attendants attempted to escort him back to his seat but the passenger struggled with them.
It resulted in one attendant suffering from a broken nose and another one sustaining bruises and a black eye, the FBI said.
Liu, who was reportedly drunk, was later subdued.
Upon the plane’s landing on Saipan at 2:30am, Commonwealth Ports Authority police personnel took custody of him.
An arrest warrant was issued on the same day.
Yesterday, Liu appeared in federal court for a bail hearing.
Federal court judge Alex Munson ordered no bail for the suspect as requested by the U.S. government, represented by assistant U.S. Attorney Jamie Browers.
The prosecution said the incident happened “within the Special Aircraft Jurisdiction of the U.S.”
Liu’s preliminary hearing is set on Sept. 21 at 4:30pm.
The suspect remains under federal custody.
