The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Commonwealth government have announced new hours of operation for the Disaster Recovery Centers located on the islands of Saipan, Tinian and Rota for this weekend.

The centers will be open from 12pm to 4pm on Saturday, Sept. 25; and they will be closed on Sunday, Sept. 26. These hours will be evaluated over the next week to determine whether they will be made permanent.

The centers will continue to operate from 8am to 6pm, Mondays through Fridays. Although the centers will be closed on Sunday, victims of Supertyphoon Chaba can still call the FEMA teleregistration number for assistance seven days a week.

“The centers will continue to be staffed with representatives of federal and Commonwealth agencies who will provide information, give status reports and answer questions about the assistance available to individuals, families and businesses who suffered damages from Supertyphoon Chaba,” said Felix Sablan, the acting governor’s authorized representative.

“If they haven’t done so yet, disaster victims are urged to start the application process by calling toll-free, 1-800-621-FEMA (1-800-621-3362). Those with hearing or speech impairments may call TTY 1-800-462-7585 to apply,” he added.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA said its continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
