An incredibly entertaining regular season in Major League Baseball was highlighted by a fast and furious battle for the final wild card slots in the playoffs. The perennial second place team in the American League East division grabbed one of the slots, and a feisty team with a Rocket grabbed the other.

Before long, the teams were knee deep in the playoffs, most fans were sure of who would make it to the finals, and one by one, the favorites answered the challenge. Everything was going as scheduled for a New York Yankees–St. Louis Cardinals showdown, until the unthinkable happened.

After leading the best-of-seven American League Championship Series three games to zero, the Yankees suffered a crushing defeat, as their foes from bean town won four-in-a-row to bring down the evil empire.

Nobody in Boston is cheering more for the Red Sox to win the World Series than the Buckner family, but there are indeed millions of BoSox fans on the edge of their seats, waiting for the day in which the curse of the bambino may be forever broken.

Do they have a shot? Will they win? Are the Cardinals going to take this series from Boston as they did in 1946? Who is going to win the World Series?

“I’m going for the bird! They’re good and they’re the best. They are the man!”

“The Sox are going to take the Series. They have Schilling, Ortiz, and Martinez. I mean, come on—do you really think the Cards have a chance?”

Melissa Castro
Athlete’s Foot

“Any team that can come back to beat the Yankees in four straight games deserves to win the series. Plus they have the pitchers to close them out.”

Ray Palacios
NMPASI

“My son is really into the Series, and at the rate the Red Sox are going I am sure that they are going to win it.”

Rose Igitol
SML president

“It’s Boston, of course. My man Schilling is there. My prediction is that they will win it in six games.”

Tony Rogolifoi
SML League coordinator
