Feeding-at-the-trough politics
I was observing the Palau election this past weekend and was greatly impressed because they were voting for people they believed in and not because of what one had to offer in terms of food, drinks and the like. If we can change our way of doing our election activities here in the Commonwealth, we can save a lot of money and then more candidates can participate, be it the elite or the common people. Let this event be a learning experience for our Commonwealth where we can develop and improve upon.
Our political leaders must take the first step and make an end to the costly political expenses of food and drinks for pocket meetings and rallies because the voters do not become focused on the issue, but rather are driven there for the material things. Isn’t it true that when we go to pocket meetings, majority of the time we see the same old faces whose basic presence is to devour the beer and the food. Do you think they really listen to what you are talking about? Let’s face it, majority of them do not. Our political leaders must learn to take the stand as to what can be done and what shouldn’t be done.
Should legislation be in place to correct our present political activity gatherings? I say yes! Voters must be made to understand that they need to listen to the issues and not misuse and abuse the candidates through material things.
I leave you with a word of wisdom that “love cannot be bought, it is given.” An observation worth exploring.
