10 teams advance to playoffs
Six teams from the 18-and-under seniors division and four from the 14-and-under juniors advanced to the playoffs, as the elimination round of the basketball competition of the 3rd Annual Pacific Rim Youth Goodwill Tournament wrapped up Wednesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Leading the pack in the seniors is defending champion Ol’Aces and the team will be joined in the playoffs by Guam’s Southern Youth Basketball Association, Saipan Sixers, Garapan Rollers I, Tinian, and Cyclones.
Teams in the juniors division Final Four, meanwhile, are Saipan Sixers, Garapan Rollers I, SYBAA, and defending champion Oyea.
Ol’Aces finished Pool A with a perfect 3-0 mark after beating Garapan Rollers I and Merizo from Guam Wednesday. Jeremy Winfield, Dan Barcinas, and Seth Hocking knocked in double figure scores in Ol’Aces’ 64-56 win over G-Rollers in the morning, while the team routed Merizo later in the evening.
Sixers took out Sparks I 87-65 to raise their record to 3-0 in Pool B. Sixers were led by reserves Adrian Echon and Jack Lizama, who scored 16 and 15 points, respectively.
SYBA, meanwhile, bludgeoned Sparks II in the curtain raiser, 69-28, and then did the same to Tinian, 77-37, in the afternoon to end the first round with a 3-0 record to top Pool C. Vance San Nicolas’ 14 paced SYBA in the victory over Sparks II, while Ruben Quinata led the way in the win against Tinian with 16 markers.
G-Rollers I made up for their loss to Ol’Aces by whipping Chalan Kanoa Saints in the nightcap, 95-72, and finished the eliminations with a 2-1 mark. The 20 points of Lester Babauta and 17 of Vince Teregeyo led them.
Cyclones defeated G-Rollers II in the penultimate game of the day and wound up with a 2-1 record. Tinian ended its campaign with the same win-loss standing in Pool C after falling to SYBA.
Other matches in the 18-and-under age group saw Merizo nip CK Saints, 53-49 and G-Rollers III surprise Sparks II, 53-49.
In the only available results from the 14-and-under division, Sixers deflated Oyea 65-57 to top Pool A with thee wins and no loss. Sixers will play G-Rollers I in the semifinals. Garapan (2-1) finished second in Pool B. Despite the loss, Oyea advanced with their 2-1 mark and will square off with Pool B topnotcher SYBA (3-0).
