With the CNMI set to hold a general election this Nov. 5, 2005, the Commonwealth Election Commission is reminding the public of the ongoing voter registration.
The commission, in particular, is urging eligible voting-aged students temporarily residing outside the CNMI who are currently spending the holidays on the islands to verify their eligibility and if they are already registered to vote in the November polls.
Eligible voters living in various parts of the United States are also encouraged by the commission “to assist Commonwealth citizens register to vote, apply to vote by absentee voting, or how to properly cast absentee ballots.” Interested individuals in the states besides Hawaii, Idaho, Maryland, Nevada, Oregon, Virginia, Washington or Washington D.C. should undergo training while they are here on Saipan, though they must be outside the CNMI months before the general election in November.
As of Nov. 30, 2004, a total of 11,838 voters have registered from a total of 6 districts. There are 4,589 registrants from Districts 1A – 1E; 788 from District ED No. 2; 2,331 registrants from Districts No.3A – 3C; 1,860 registrants from Districts 4A – 4C; 970 from District ED No. 5; and 1,300 from District ED No. 6.
Contact the commission at 664-VOTE or e-mail them at cec@saipan.com or CEC@vzpacifica.net for more information regarding training on assisting eligible voters about election matters.
