The Coast Guard Marianas Section, Coast Guard Cutter Galveston Island, and Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Guam merged on Dec. 31 into a single new unit, now called the Coast Guard Sector Guam.

The Coast Guard is establishing sector commands nationwide by integrating groups, marine safety offices, vessel traffic services, and, in some cases, air stations, to more effectively manage the sweeping changes to the operational environment resulting from the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The Coast Guard said in a statement that it will continue its commitment to the various missions around Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. In fact, the sector organization is expected to improve service delivery by creating one-stop customer shopping for Coast Guard services here.

Captain Dale Rausch, presently Commander, Marianas Section and Commanding Officer, Marine Safety Office Guam, will serve as the first Commander of Sector Guam. He will also continue to serve as the Captain of the Port, Federal Maritime Security Coordinator, Officer in Charge, Marine Inspection OCMI, Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator, and Federal On-Scene Coordinator for oil and hazardous material spills for Guam and the CNMI.

“This will be little more than a name change for us,” said Rausch, “as all of the Coast Guard units here on Guam have shared the same operations and communications center since 1977, and MARSEC and the MSO have had a single Commander.”

Not included in this merge are the Coast Guard Cutter Sequoia, which will remain a unit of the 14th District in Honolulu, and Electronic Support Detachment Guam, which will remain a sub-unit of Electronic Support Unit Honolulu.
