SCHOLARSHIP SLOTS OPEN FOR MEDIA, COMMUNICATIONS STUDENTS

HONOLULU—Pacific Islanders in Communications, the non-profit organization that seeks to raise the profile of Pacific Islanders in national broadcast programming, will be awarding scholarships of up to $5,000 to students pursuing college degrees in media and/or communications.

Applicants must be pursuing certificates or degrees in media and/or communications from accredited two- or four-year schools, colleges, or universities, or from other qualified institutions and programs. Individuals of Pacific Island ancestry are encouraged to apply, particularly the descendants of the indigenous peoples of Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Marianas and other Pacific Islands.

Applicants also must be at least 18 years old; a citizen, legal permanent resident, or national of the United States or its territories; demonstrate academic proficiency or have experience in media or communications; and show a commitment to the Pacific Islander community.

The non-recurring, non-renewable annual scholarships will be for up to $5,000 per student, per year. Deadline for applications is Friday, March 4, 2005, at 5pm.

NMC TOURISM SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

The Northern Marianas College Tourism Scholarship Board is currently accepting applications for the Spring 2005 semester.

The scholarship will fund the following tourism education programs:

1. High school juniors and seniors taking tourism courses at NMC; or currently enrolled NMC students whom are majoring in hospitality management.

2. Current hospitality industry employees who have been employed for at least two years with a HANMI member who are pursuing professional development at NMC or through other approved programs, e.g. AHMA Educational Institute courses.

3. Currently enrolled NMC students or HANMI employees who are participating in approved internships or tourism-related courses abroad.

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must:

1. Be a U.S. citizen or CNMI resident, and/or be currently employed in the hospitality industry with at least two years of employment service in the CNMI.

2. Be enrolled as a full or part-time student in at least one tourism course at NMC or be enrolled in another approved professional tourism course during the semester that the scholarship is being awarded.

3. Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (does not apply to HANMI employee applicants).

Interested applicants may obtain a Tourism Scholarship application form from the NMC Financial Aid Office, NMC Business Department, or HANMI member hotel.
