Donations sent to tsunami stricken areas
The Indian community in the CNMI ended its weeklong donation drive last Jan. 10 and collected a total of $2,339 and boxes of relief goods for the victims of the killer tsunamis that killed thousands of lives in South Asia.
Mustafa Shakir, who led the fund drive, thanked all those who supported it, specially those who responded to the call and the media who helped the group promote the project.
Shakir said that the Indian community will remit the money today to the Times of India Relief Fund, a foundation arm of the Times Group based in India, which is the largest and most professionally managed media conglomerate in India. This group has been at the forefront of relief wherever and whenever it is needed.
“They have a proven track record,” said Shakir. “When you donate to Times, we can specifically tell them to give the money to women and children.”
“We would like to thank the media, the radio stations and the people who contributed,” said Shakir who also shared that the result of the donation drive was beyond the group’s expectations.
Though the Indian community clearly encouraged cash donations, they also received donations in kind. “We gave boxes of donations in kind. We gave the clothes to the Thai community,” Shakir said.
The Thai community gathered $1,250 in cash donations and more than 20 boxes of relief goods such as clothes, medicines and food.
Rian “Khai” Charoenkhai, the community president, will remit the cash donation this weekend to Thailand’s Prime Minister account. The donation boxes will be forwarded to Thailand through the initiative of community members who will fly personally to Thailand just to give these boxes to foundations providing relief to the victims.
The Thai community also expressed its gratitude to all the people who called and donated for the victims of the killer waves in Phuket, Thailand. “Thanks very much for the support to Thai community,” said Khai.
