CUC to move storage site for chlorine cylinders
Plans are underway to relocate the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s storage site for chlorine cylinders to bring it in compliance with federal safety rules and regulations.
The utility firm is looking to move the storage site to the northeast corner of the pole yard where the old CUC building was located, in the wake of a notice of safety/security compliance issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.
CUC executive director Lorraine Babauta said she believes the new area is suitable and will be approved by the Coast Guard because it meets the 90-meter minimum distance from the pipeline.
She added that another advantage of the proposed site is that it has concrete flooring, saving CUC on the cost of the flooring.
The total area of the proposed site is 50 feet long and 40 feet wide, she said.
“Proper fencing materials will be used for this project so this proposal should also meet [Department of] Homeland Security [requirements],” Babauta assured the Coast Guard in a letter.
She said CUC is looking to enclose the site with an 8-foot chain link fence with two strand of barbwire on top, and an 8-foot-wide double gate.
“Because the recommended relocation site will need USCG approval, we may be forced to use the old site for future shipment of chlorine cylinders until we receive word from your office. Should the USCG approve the recommended site, we request that CUC be given ample time to complete the fencing project,” Babauta said. (Agnes E. Donato)
