Good turnout for proposed programs

The Saipan Little League took steps to expand its appeal to some of the younger aspiring athletes on Saturday, as the organizers held a special meeting at the American Memorial Park to entertain the interests of the community into the possibility of launching three new programs for the upcoming season.

According to Paul Baron, there was a steady flow of parents and players who stopped by the pavilion to inquire about the potential Tee-ball, Minor League, and girls softball teams.

“There was a good turnout at the park, and there is definitely plenty of interest out there, but we still need to get the word out about the leagues,” said baron.

Despite their efforts to inform the public about their meeting via radio, television, and newspapers, the organizers were told by interested people after the fact that they didn’t know about the event.

According to Baron, the Little League will be receiving help from the Public Schools System to help them spread the word, as Rita Sablan will allow the league to have registration forms at the schools.

As it currently stands, league officials believe that they will have enough players to start a Tee-ball league, but are still a few shy for the Minor League and the girls softball, but Baron said that benefits those who were unable to attend the meeting.

“We didn’t pass a deadline to sign up, so there are still plenty of opportunities for anyone who is interested in signing up for the teams,” he said.

The proposed Tee-ball league is aimed at teaching kids, between the ages of five and eight-years-old, the fundamentals of baseball, while the Minor League program would serve as an outlet for kids between the ages of nine and 10 to develop their skills before moving up to the current league.

If enough interest is generated, the girls softball league could feature several age groups, to include Major (ages 11 and 12), Junior (ages 13 and 14), Senior (ages 15 and 16), and Big League (ages 17 and 18).
