SIS wins JV basketball title
The girls from the Saipan International School put the finishing touches on their perfect season on Monday by beating Grace Christian Academy on their home court, 32-25, in the championship of the 2005 Junior Varsity Basketball League for the private schools of the CNMI.
According to their coach Rick Linkenhelt, SIS made the most of their nimble offense and smothering defense to overpower the Eagles throughout the game.
“We have a really talented bunch of girls. We were able to run the full court press and go with fast breaks all game long,” he said.
SIS was led by league co-MVP Noelle Calvo, who scored nine points, but got plenty of scoring from Lena Guzman (six points), Lila Mailman (six points), Madison Smith (four points), All-League first teamer Camryn Mosley (four points), and a bucket from Da Hee Kim.
The champions continued their successful 8-0 campaign in the regular season by downing Mount Carmel, 44-11, in the semifinals before facing the tough GCA squad, and Linkenhelt credited the consistent effort from all of the 18 SIS players during their preparation and when it mattered during the game.
“We practiced hard; we played hard, and had a great time doing it. We have a great group of girls,” he said.
