With little more than a month remaining before the 2005 Saipan XTERRA Saipan Championship and the 15th Annual Tagaman, the Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation is holding an off-road race as a tune up for the biggest multi-sports event in the CNMI.

The Verizon Off-Road Adventure XTERRA Type Extreme Race Event III (V-ORAXTERE) will offer swimmers, bikers, and runners the challenge to try their hand at all three sports this Sunday, March 6, at the Northern end of Saipan, in roughly half the distance of the XTERRA.

Organizers have planned a rugged course, and estimate the swim distance to be 750-meters, followed by a roughly 15-kilometer mountain bike ride, and a run course approximately 4km.

The event is not limited to individuals, as teams are welcome to compete, though they cannot win the coveted “World’s Heaviest Trophy.”

Registration will take place at Pau Pau Beach and will remain open from 7am through 7:45am, before the racers are sent into the water at 8am.

The race was formerly known as the ORAXTERE until the addition of Verizon as title sponsor prompted to change the name in this, its third edition.

In keeping with tradition, participants have the opportunity to vie for the “World’s Heaviest Trophy,” and according to NMITF president Stephan Samoyloff, there will be an assortment of prizes as well.

“There will be nice hats, excellent Verizon prizes, including a couple prepaid phones (must be present to win), more hats, and some tasty Gatorade,” he said.

Anyone interested in entering the race is encouraged to pre-register at samoy@yahoo.com.

The fee to participate in the mountain bike course is $5, while the cost to compete in the full race is $10 for individuals and $15 for a team. NMITF members only need to pay $5, and all participants will receive a T-shirt with their paid registration.
