Busy, busy, busy week
The 13th Annual Marianas Cup Beach Volleyball Festival, 30th Annual Laguna Regatta, and the preparations for the South Pacific Mini-Games and 2005 Saipan Little League Baseball season highlighted the past week.
Koichi Nishimura and Tatsuo Yamamoto left the main court of the Pacific Islands Club as champions Sunday in the Marianas Cup after putting the finishing touches on their tournament of perfection by knocking off fellow Japanese professional Satoshi Watanabe and local veteran of the beach volleyball scene Nick Castro in straight sets, 21-7 and 21-14.
Meanwhile, the tandem of Ryoko Tokuno and Chiaki Kusuhara rallied from the depths of the loser’s bracket to win the women’s crown.
Each of the winning teams took home $2,800 in cash as well as roundtrip airfare and accommodations at the PIC for next year’s tournament.
Also, the husband-and-wife combo of Tony Stearns and Janet McCullough continue to put up spectacular performances, guiding their catamaran to victory for the 11th time in the 30th Annual Laguna Regatta over the weekend.
The Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association met on Thursday, discussing financial matters of each sport interested in competing in the upcoming Mini-SPG in Palau this July.
So far, only four teams—athletics, tennis, triathlon, and swimming—have met the March 3 deadline for airfare costs.
The Saipan Little League Baseball Association was also having its fair share of utilizing the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conference room as they put on the finishing touches before hosting its Major Little, Junior, Senior, and Big leagues action beginning yesterday. A total of 29 teams will suit up.
Also making his presence felt was Stephan Samoyloff, who bested 28 other competitors to win the Capitol Hill Challenge off road mountain bike race hosted by the Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation.
The week also featured the start of the 2005 Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League.
Other activities include the Mobil Oil Co-ed Invitational, BANMI 25-and-under , and MISA Interscholastic High School basketball leagues, World Organized Rocball, and the Island Wide Volleyball League.
