The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library will be closed for at least three days beginning this Monday so it could upgrade its services.

Library director Kevin Latham said the library will be upgrading its automation system server in the Information Technology Center.

He said the Northern Marianas College library is going to hook up with the public library, requiring an upgrade on the software that the library is using for its services so that connection to the public library would be easier.

“We [NMC and public library] share the same system and they’ve been having some troubles getting their system up,” Latham said.

NMC’s head librarian denied there is anything wrong with their operations. She said library operations are normal at the moment. Latham admitted he was not completely aware whether there really is a problem with the college library’s system.

He said the public library has been hooked up for about a year and a half now with NMC but, until the upgrade is done, the college is finding it hard to hook up with them.

DYNIX, the software vendor from Australia, will be sending representatives to work on the upgrade from April 3 to 5.

The DYNIX software helps public library users locate their favorite books; it also keeps track of the circulation system of the library as to what books are available and what books are already checked out.

Latham said they’ve been using DYNIX’s services for at least three years now.

The upgrade is expected to be finished in three days but could take longer than that, said Latham, as he could not tell what DYNIX might configure during the updating. He said he is not sure when the system would be fully up and running.

“It might mean we might disrupt services for just small amount of servicing,” he said.

Latham said more upgrades might be implemented in the future.
